Even more recently, the introduction of messenger bots on Facebook in 2016 has demonstrated that chatbots have even greater potential. Introduced in 2006 and initially developed to compete on the game show Jeopardy! Other successful innovations in chatbots followed, including Apple’s Siri released in 2011, Google Now in 2012, and Amazon’s Alexa in 2015. And, in today’s data-driven world, people want their questions to be answered quickly and efficiently.Ī good example of a successful modern chatbot is IBM’s Watson. Such usage is because chatbots provide an easy, intuitive user experience. As the technology continues to improve, chatbot usage has become widespread. Over the past decade or so, chatbots have proven that they are much more than a short-lived fad (Check out our History of Chatbots article here). Frustrations are minimized, and usage of the technology is consistently productive. Their expertise allows for the tech to become mainstream as expectations and capabilities are clearly defined. Industry leaders gain experience in implementing the technology. Expectations begin to conform with the true value of the technology. Slope of EnlightenmentĪs the new tech develops, its uses and benefits become more understood. This failure is often due to lack of development or to inexperience in the implementation of the technology. Interest wanes as technology providers fail to deliver on early adopter expectations. Some instances are successful others aren’t. The potential of the technology is often overstated. Peak of Inflated ExpectationsĮarly success stories begin to emerge, sparking widespread interest. Generally in its developmental infancy, this technology often lacks a clear path to a quantifiable return on investment. New technology is introduced to the marketplace. Stages of the Hype Cycle Technology Trigger The graph shows how the perception and usage of a certain technology changes over time and is broken into five phases. The hype cycle is a graphical representation developed by Gartner that illustrates a trend in the adoption of specific technologies. This is where a tool like the Hype Cycle is helpful. As Roy Amara observed, “We tend to overestimate the effect of a technology in the short run and underestimate the effect in the long run.” Understanding what kind of impact a specific innovation will have is not always easy.
